DurbanGysbert Wege, a 21-year-old batter, was diagnosed with heart inflammation in the middle of the SA20 season, which dealt a blow to the Durban Super Giants. Notably, Wege announced on social media that he would not be playing in the remaining SA20 season.
It's interesting to note that Wege has only played in three Twenty20 matches, scoring 20 runs in each. The young player was brought into DSG as a future prospect after making his debut.
But given that he had a health issue so early in his career, only time will tell what the 21-year-old's future holds.
"I had possibly the worst day of my life to date after living the dream for the previous two weeks and learning from some of the world's top players. I was unexpectedly diagnosed with myopericarditis, an inflammation of the heart, after experiencing some sporadic chest pains. At the age of 21, this was not something I ever had on my bingo card as a child. Wege wrote on Instagram, "Until a few days ago, I had no idea what it was."
Having said that, each of us is dealt a different hand in life; all you can do is play the hand you're dealt and just make it work. I want to express my gratitude to my close family and friends for their support and care; it is greatly appreciated. Injuries have made the last few years difficult for me, and this is just another obstacle I'll get past. It's time to relax and heal completely. I'll return! He continued.
The next game for DSG will be against the Capitals. In relation to Wege's team, the Durban Super Giants are currently ranked fourth in the league. The team will play the Pretoria Capitals in their next tournament match. It will be interesting to watch how DSG performs when the teams square off on January 7 at Kingsmead, Durban.
